Safer Buy
Nissan Leaf
Mk1 2011–2017 · Mk2 2018–present

The original mass-market EV. The Mk1 has well-known battery degradation on high-mileage examples — but it is at least easy to check. The Mk2 40kWh is a much better car. Battery is owned not leased.

  • Battery owned outright — no lease complication
  • Mk1: check battery health bars on display
  • Mk2 40kWh: real-world 200–230km range
  • Mk2 62kWh: real-world 300–340km range
  • CHAdeMO rapid charge — fading standard
  • Wide service network in Ireland
Renault Zoe
2013–2021 · Z.E.40 & R135

Good range for the price but the battery lease on older examples is a major complication many Irish buyers overlook. Always verify battery ownership status before viewing a Zoe.

  • Battery lease on pre-2020 — monthly fee applies
  • Battery-owned versions available post-2019
  • Z.E.40: real-world 200–240km range
  • R135: real-world 280–320km range
  • CCS charging on R135 — good standard
  • Less service support in Ireland than Leaf

⚠️ Renault Zoe Battery Lease — Critical Check Before You Buy

Many pre-2020 Renault Zoes sold in Ireland were supplied with the battery on a separate monthly lease from Renault Finance — typically €59–€109/month. If you buy one of these cars, the lease transfers to you and you pay it monthly on top of the purchase price. The car will not rapid charge without an active lease. Always ask explicitly: "Is the battery owned or leased?" and verify with a Renault dealer using the VIN before purchasing.

⚠️ Nissan Leaf CHAdeMO — A Fading Standard

The Nissan Leaf uses CHAdeMO for rapid charging. Many newer Irish public chargers — including newer Ionity and some ESB units — are CCS only. CHAdeMO chargers still exist widely but the standard is being phased out. For a Leaf used primarily locally this is minor. For long-distance travel it is worth checking your regular charging stops support CHAdeMO.

Which generation Leaf to buy

Avoid high-mileage Mk1 Leafs (pre-2018) unless battery health shows 10/12 bars minimum — anything below is significantly degraded. The Mk2 40kWh is the entry-level sweet spot. The Mk2 62kWh is the best Leaf for longer Irish commutes — real-world 300km+ is achievable in summer.

CarAdvisor Verdict

Nissan Leaf Mk2 — fewer complications, wider support

The Nissan Leaf Mk2 40kWh is the safer budget EV purchase in Ireland. Battery owned outright, easy health check, wide service network. The Renault Zoe can be excellent value if you confirm battery ownership — but the lease complication catches too many Irish buyers off guard. Never buy a Zoe without verifying battery status with Renault Ireland first. Never buy a Mk1 Leaf without checking all 12 battery bars are present.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

Should I buy a Nissan Leaf or Renault Zoe in Ireland?
The Nissan Leaf Mk2 62kWh is the recommended choice — larger battery, better range, and critically, the battery is owned outright. The Renault Zoe on some contracts had a battery lease arrangement that makes the car significantly cheaper but adds a monthly battery rental cost. Always confirm Zoe battery ownership status before buying.
What is the Renault Zoe battery lease problem?
Some Renault Zoe models were sold with a battery lease arrangement where the buyer owns the car but rents the battery from Renault for €50–€100 per month. This significantly reduces the purchase price but adds ongoing cost. Always confirm whether the battery is owned outright or leased before buying any used Zoe.
How do I check battery health on a Nissan Leaf?
The Nissan Leaf displays battery health as a bar reading on the dashboard — 12/12 bars is full health. Below 10/12 bars indicates significant degradation. Always check this before buying. A Leaf with 10 bars or fewer should be significantly cheaper or avoided.
What range does a Nissan Leaf Mk2 62kWh give in Ireland?
Real-world range in Irish mixed driving is 250–300km. Range drops in winter and at motorway speeds. The 40kWh Leaf gives 180–220km. For most Irish commuters the 62kWh version is the only one worth considering.
