The six best picks under €25,000
€16,000–€25,000 · 2017–2021
The Kodiaq is the outstanding pick under €25k. It is the largest SUV in this class, available as a genuine 7-seater, and shares its platform with the VW Tiguan at a significantly lower price. The 2.0 TDI 150hp with DSG is the engine to have. Check DSG fluid history (every 60,000km — almost always missed). The Kodiaq Combi has more boot space than many estate cars. Exceptional value for families.
€20,000–€25,000 · 2019–2021
The Mk5 RAV4 Hybrid (2019+) is the most reliable used family SUV available at this price. Toyota's self-charging hybrid system requires almost no maintenance beyond normal servicing. Real-world economy of 46–5.2L/100km. The hybrid battery has a 10-year/240,000km warranty. No plug required. Exceptionally strong residuals — but that also means it costs more than rivals. Worth every cent for reliability peace of mind.
€14,000–€22,000 · 2015–2021
The Tucson Mk3 is excellent value — well-equipped, comfortable, and the 1.6 CRDi diesel is a strong, efficient engine. The 7-speed DCT automatic needs fluid every 60,000km — check this. Pre-2019 cars have a slightly dated interior but nothing is wrong with them mechanically. Post-2019 Tucson Mk3 facelift brings Apple CarPlay and improved safety systems. Good used buy with full history.
€13,000–€22,000 · 2016–2021
The Sportage Mk4 benefits from Kia's 7-year warranty — many Irish examples still have warranty coverage. The 1.6 CRDi diesel is solid and efficient. Shared platform with the Tucson. The DCT auto needs fluid — same check as Tucson. Generally reliable with full Kia service history. The Sportage is the most sensible used SUV purchase for a first-time SUV buyer — straightforward, well supported, and widely available.
€18,000–€25,000 · 2016–2021
The Tiguan Mk2 is a very capable, refined SUV — but commands a premium over the mechanically identical Skoda Kodiaq. The 2.0 TDI 150hp with DSG is the engine combination to have. DSG fluid history is essential — 60,000km intervals, almost universally missed. The 7-seat Allspace variant is available from around €22,000. If DSG fluid is confirmed, a clean Tiguan is a strong purchase.
€10,000–€18,000 · 2014–2021
The Qashqai is the most affordable entry point in this group. The 1.5 dCi manual diesel is the safe choice — simple, efficient, and largely reliable. The CVT automatic on petrol Qashqais needs fluid every 60,000km — almost always missed. Never replace the CVT without this check. A manual diesel Qashqai with full history is good budget value but lacks the space of the Kodiaq or Tucson.
CarAdvisor Outright Recommendation
Skoda Kodiaq 2.0 TDI DSG for practicality and value. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid for reliability and running costs. The Kodiaq gives you the most car for the money; the RAV4 gives you the least to worry about. Both are outstanding purchases with confirmed service history.
