Two very different SUVs at overlapping prices. The RAV4 is larger, more reliable, and available as a hybrid. The Qashqai is more compact, more common on Irish roads, and cheaper to buy. Here's the full picture.
The RAV4 is a more serious, more durable SUV than the Qashqai. The Mk5 Hybrid is one of the most capable used SUV purchases on the Irish market — exceptional fuel economy, AWD standard, and Toyota reliability.
The Qashqai is more compact, easier to drive in town, and cheaper to buy than the RAV4. The 1.5 dCi diesel manual is a strong choice — but CVT automatic versions have a well-documented fluid issue that catches Irish buyers out.

The CVT automatic gearbox on the Qashqai requires fluid every 60,000km. Nissan does not list this as a scheduled service item, so the overwhelming majority of Irish Qashqais with a CVT have never had it done. A failing CVT costs €2,500–€4,000 to replace. A fluid change costs €150. On any CVT Qashqai, this is the single most important check before buying.
Recommendation: On the Qashqai, buy the 1.5 dCi diesel manual and avoid the CVT entirely. On the RAV4, the Mk5 Hybrid AWD is the version to have — it is one of the outstanding used car purchases in Ireland at any price point.
The Mk5 (2019+) Hybrid AWD is the recommended RAV4. Outstanding real-world economy, genuine AWD, and Toyota build quality. Mk4 2.0 petrol or 2.2 diesel are solid if budget does not stretch to Mk5.
The 2017–2021 Qashqai Mk2 facelift with 1.5 dCi diesel and manual gearbox is the safest Qashqai to buy. Reliable engine, no CVT to worry about, and the facelift brought improved interior quality.
RAV4 Mk4 2.0 petrol — €17,000–€22,000. RAV4 Mk5 Hybrid AWD — €26,000–€38,000. Qashqai Mk2 1.5 dCi manual — €12,000–€18,000. Qashqai Mk3 — €20,000–€28,000.
The RAV4 Hybrid is genuinely superior in reliability, economy, and long-term durability. If your budget stretches to a 2019+ RAV4 Hybrid, it is the correct choice. At lower budgets, the Qashqai 1.5 dCi manual is a reasonable buy — but only the manual. Never buy a CVT Qashqai without confirmed fluid change history.
