Toyota RAV4
Mk4 2013–2018 · Mk5 Hybrid 2019–present

The RAV4 is a more serious, more durable SUV than the Qashqai. The Mk5 Hybrid is one of the most capable used SUV purchases on the Irish market — exceptional fuel economy, AWD standard, and Toyota reliability.

  • Mk5 Hybrid AWD — the outstanding recommendation
  • 2.5 hybrid: 5.5–6.5L/100km real world
  • Toyota reliability — far superior to Qashqai
  • Larger interior and boot than Qashqai
  • No CVT gearbox issues — hybrid system instead
Nissan Qashqai
Mk2 2014–2021 · Mk3 2021–present

The Qashqai is more compact, easier to drive in town, and cheaper to buy than the RAV4. The 1.5 dCi diesel manual is a strong choice — but CVT automatic versions have a well-documented fluid issue that catches Irish buyers out.

  • More compact — easier to park in Irish towns
  • 1.5 dCi diesel manual — most reliable spec
  • CVT automatic: fluid every 60,000km — often missed
  • More common on Irish market — more choice
  • Cheaper than RAV4 for same year

The Qashqai CVT warning

The CVT automatic gearbox on the Qashqai requires fluid every 60,000km. Nissan does not list this as a scheduled service item, so the overwhelming majority of Irish Qashqais with a CVT have never had it done. A failing CVT costs €2,500–€4,000 to replace. A fluid change costs €150. On any CVT Qashqai, this is the single most important check before buying.

Recommendation: On the Qashqai, buy the 1.5 dCi diesel manual and avoid the CVT entirely. On the RAV4, the Mk5 Hybrid AWD is the version to have — it is one of the outstanding used car purchases in Ireland at any price point.

Which generation to buy

RAV4 — Mk5 Hybrid if budget allows

The Mk5 (2019+) Hybrid AWD is the recommended RAV4. Outstanding real-world economy, genuine AWD, and Toyota build quality. Mk4 2.0 petrol or 2.2 diesel are solid if budget does not stretch to Mk5.

Qashqai — Mk2 facelift 1.5 dCi manual

The 2017–2021 Qashqai Mk2 facelift with 1.5 dCi diesel and manual gearbox is the safest Qashqai to buy. Reliable engine, no CVT to worry about, and the facelift brought improved interior quality.

CarAdvisor Verdict

Toyota RAV4 Mk5 Hybrid — if budget allows. Qashqai 1.5 dCi manual — if not.

The RAV4 Hybrid is genuinely superior in reliability, economy, and long-term durability. If your budget stretches to a 2019+ RAV4 Hybrid, it is the correct choice. At lower budgets, the Qashqai 1.5 dCi manual is a reasonable buy — but only the manual. Never buy a CVT Qashqai without confirmed fluid change history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

Should I buy a Toyota RAV4 or Nissan Qashqai in Ireland?

What is the price difference between a RAV4 and Qashqai in Ireland?
A good used Qashqai Mk2 costs €14,000–€22,000. An equivalent RAV4 Mk5 hybrid costs €26,000–€36,000. The RAV4 is significantly more expensive but offers better reliability, economy and residual value.
