BMW 3 Series
F30 2012–2018 · G20 2019–present

Better to drive than the C Class, more driver-focused, and the F30 330d N57 is one of the outstanding used car engines on the Irish market. N47 chain issue is well documented — easy to check and avoid.

  • F30 330d N57 — outstanding engine
  • N47 320d — avoid pre-2013 build date
  • F31 Touring estate exceptional value
  • More engaging to drive than C Class
  • ZF 8-speed auto fluid every 60,000km
Mercedes C Class
W204 2007–2014 · W205 2014–2021

More comfortable and refined than the 3 Series, better rear seat space, and the W205 interior is genuinely premium. The OM651 diesel chain tensioner is the fault to know about on pre-2012 W204.

  • W205 C220d — strong and reliable post-2015
  • W204 C220d pre-2012 — OM651 chain risk
  • 7G-Tronic auto needs fluid every 60,000km
  • More comfortable ride than 3 Series
  • Higher servicing costs at main dealer

The engine faults — know these before you buy either

BMW N47 — rear timing chain

The N47 2.0 diesel in the F30 320d and E90 320d has a rear-mounted timing chain requiring full engine removal to replace — €3,000–€6,000+. Post-mid-2012 F30 has a revised tensioner. Always verify build date, not registration date. Any cold-start rattle — walk away immediately.

Mercedes OM651 — chain tensioner pre-2012

The W204 C220d pre-2012 has a known timing chain tensioner issue. Post-2012 revised and largely resolved. The W205 (2014+) C220d is essentially fault-free in this regard. Buy a W205 and the chain concern disappears entirely.

Which generation to buy

BMW — F30 330d or F31 330d Touring

The 330d with N57 six-cylinder bypasses the N47 issue entirely and delivers a genuinely outstanding car. The F31 Touring estate is the outstanding recommendation — more space than any compact SUV, better to drive than all of them.

Mercedes — W205 C220d post-2015

The W205 generation is a significant step up from the W204 in every way. Post-2015 C220d with 170hp BlueTEC is the engine to have — efficient, refined, and largely trouble-free with full service history.

CarAdvisor Verdict

BMW 3 Series F31 330d Touring — if you can stretch the budget

The BMW 3 Series is the better driver's car and the F31 330d Touring estate is one of the outstanding used car purchases available in Ireland at any price. If you want comfort and rear space over driving enjoyment, the W205 C220d post-2015 is a genuinely excellent car. Avoid W204 pre-2012 on both chain grounds and age. Never buy either without confirmed service history and a cold-start check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

Should I buy a BMW 3 Series or Mercedes C-Class in Ireland?
The BMW F31 330d Touring is our outstanding recommendation — the N57 diesel is one of the finest engines in its class, and the estate body is enormously practical. The Mercedes C-Class is refined and well-built but the 2.1 CDI diesel has known injector issues. Both require full specialist service history.
Is the BMW 3 Series or Mercedes C-Class more reliable in Ireland?
With the right engine, the BMW F30/F31 with the N57 diesel is marginally more reliable. The Mercedes C-Class CDI has a documented injector weakness. Both are premium cars with premium maintenance costs — budget accordingly.
How much does a used BMW 3 Series cost versus Mercedes C-Class in Ireland?
A good used BMW F30 3 Series costs €12,000–€20,000. An equivalent Mercedes W205 C-Class costs €13,000–€22,000. Prices are similar, with the Mercedes commanding a slight premium in some configurations.
Is a used BMW or Mercedes more expensive to maintain in Ireland?
Both are significantly more expensive to maintain than mainstream brands — budget €400–€700 per service. BMW specialist garages are widely available in Ireland. Mercedes servicing is similarly priced. Parts for both are expensive; avoid either without a full service history.

Before You Buy
Run a History Check on This BMW 3 Series or Mercedes C-Class

A Cartell or Motorcheck report costs €10–€15 and takes two minutes. These are the flags to watch for on a used BMW 3 Series or Mercedes C-Class:

Finance outstanding — premium cars, PCP finance is near-universal
Mileage fraud — ex-company and fleet cars, clocking very common
UK import — large volumes of both imported, check plate history
Write-off — expensive accident repairs frequently concealed on premium cars
