The BMW 3 Series is the benchmark compact executive car — and one of the most popular used cars in Ireland. The F30 generation is the sweet spot for value, while the G20 brings modern technology. The same N47 timing chain issue that affects the 5 Series applies here. This guide cuts through the noise and tells you exactly what to buy.
The E90 320d (2007–2011) with the N47 engine has the same rear-mounted timing chain issue as the 5 Series. Catastrophic failure, €3,000–€6,000+ to repair engine-out. Never buy an E90 320d without confirmed chain replacement. The F30 320d from 2012 uses a revised N47 with better chain tensioner — post-2013 F30 is significantly safer.
The F30 is the definitive used 3 Series recommendation for Irish buyers. Available in saloon, touring estate, and GT bodystyles. The estate (F31 Touring) is particularly good value — more practical than most rival SUVs and better to drive than all of them.
320d post-2013 — the revised N47 with improved chain tensioner. Efficient, adequate performance, widely available. Full service history essential. Check for EGR valve issues on high mileage cars.
330d (N57) — the six-cylinder N57 transforms the 3 Series. Smooth, fast, and more reliable than the four-cylinder diesels. If budget stretches to it, the 330d is a noticeably better car in every way.
320i / 328i petrol — N20 four-cylinder petrol had timing chain issues on 2011–2013 build dates. Post-2013 N20 is much better. The 328i is a genuinely enjoyable petrol 3 Series.
A 2014–2017 F31 330d Touring M Sport with full service history and under 120,000km. Budget €16,000–€24,000. An outstanding all-rounder — better than any SUV at this price for anyone who actually drives.
The G20 is a genuinely excellent car — better handling, more refined, and more technologically advanced than the F30. The B47 diesel is a better engine than the N47 it replaces. iDrive 7 infotainment is class-leading. The mild hybrid variants (320d 48V) offer improved efficiency.
Irish used prices for a 2019–2021 G20 320d start around €28,000. The 330d starts at €34,000. Strong residuals mean G20s hold value well — but that also means less depreciation benefit than the F30.
F30 320d saloon: €9,000–€16,000 depending on year and spec. F31 330d Touring M Sport: €16,000–€25,000. G20 320d: €26,000–€34,000. G20 330d: €32,000–€42,000. M340i G20: €42,000–€55,000.
The F31 330d Touring is the outstanding used 3 Series recommendation — practical, rewarding to drive, and strong value. Avoid any N47-engined 320d without chain confirmation. Full service history is non-negotiable.
