Ford Kuga vs Hyundai Tucson
Ireland 2026

Two of the most popular mid-size SUVs on Irish roads — but they come with very different risk profiles. The Kuga has a well-documented PHEV battery fault. The Tucson has a DCT fluid issue. Here's everything you need to know before buying either.

Ford Kuga Mk3
2019–present · PHEV, FHEV, EcoBlue diesel

The Kuga is a well-designed, comfortable SUV let down by a serious PHEV battery fault on 2020 models. The 1.5 EcoBlue diesel and FHEV mild hybrid are significantly more reliable options. Avoid early PHEV without confirmed recall fix.

  • 2020 PHEV recall — battery fire risk, must verify fix
  • 1.5 EcoBlue diesel — solid, avoid early 1.5 EcoBoost petrol
  • FHEV mild hybrid — smoother than diesel, no PHEV risk
  • Comfortable ride — better than Tucson on motorways
  • Good boot space — 645 litres

Hyundai Tucson
Mk3 2015–2020 · Mk4 2020–present

The Tucson has a cleaner reliability record than the Kuga when you avoid the DCT automatic on high-mileage examples without fluid history. More refined interior on the Mk4, strong engine lineup, wider Irish dealer network.

  • No PHEV recall issue
  • 1.6 CRDi diesel — strong and efficient
  • DCT fluid every 60,000km — check history
  • Mk4 interior significantly upgraded
  • Wider Hyundai dealer network in Ireland

The Kuga PHEV recall — what to know

Ford issued a recall on 2020 Kuga PHEVs due to a battery fire risk. All affected cars should have had the recall fix applied — verify with Ford Ireland using the VIN before considering any 2020 Kuga PHEV. Post-recall cars are generally fine but the 2020 PHEV is a higher-risk purchase than either the FHEV or the diesel. If you want a Kuga, the 1.5 EcoBlue diesel or the FHEV are the safer choices.

The Tucson DCT fluid warning

The automatic Tucson uses a 7-speed DCT that requires fluid every 60,000km. Like most DCT cars in Ireland this is almost universally missed. On any automatic Tucson, specifically request the DCT fluid service record. Budget €150–€200 for the job if it has not been done.

Which to buy at what budget

Under €18,000 — the Tucson Mk3 1.6 CRDi manual is the best choice at this level. Reliable, efficient, and no PHEV concerns. Between €18,000–€28,000 — the Tucson Mk4 offers excellent quality at a fair price. The Kuga 1.5 EcoBlue diesel is the Kuga to consider here. Over €28,000 — the Mk4 Tucson PHEV is available, but verify battery history carefully on any PHEV at this budget.

CarAdvisor Verdict

Hyundai Tucson — cleaner record, wider choice, stronger backup

The Tucson is the safer purchase. No recall history, a wider dealer network in Ireland, and the Mk4 is a genuinely premium product. The Kuga is a good car in diesel or FHEV form but the PHEV recall shadow means every Kuga PHEV needs VIN verification before you consider it — an extra layer of risk that the Tucson does not have. For most Irish buyers the Tucson Mk4 is the correct choice. The Kuga diesel is a reasonable alternative if you specifically want a larger boot.
