The Mk4 Fabia — worth knowing about

The 2021+ Mk4 Fabia is a significant upgrade that many Irish buyers overlook. It is larger, better built, and better equipped than the Mk3 — and compared to a Polo of equivalent age, it is almost always €2,000+ cheaper for the same spec. If your budget reaches to a 2022 Fabia, it is genuinely one of the best small car purchases on the Irish market.

What to check on both

Both the Polo and Fabia 1.0 TSI three-cylinder engines have a known issue with oil consumption on high-mileage examples. Check the oil level before any viewing — it should be near the maximum mark. Any car burning oil noticeably is a pass. DSG gearbox fluid applies to both — 60,000km interval, almost always missed.

CarAdvisor tip: Avoid the 1.2 TSI four-cylinder found in older Polo and Fabia models (pre-2014). It has a known timing chain and carbon build-up issue on the intake valves. The later 1.0 TSI three-cylinder is the engine to have.

CarAdvisor Verdict

Skoda Fabia Mk4 — the Polo premium is hard to justify

The Skoda Fabia and VW Polo are mechanically identical. The Polo badge commands a consistent €1,500–€3,000 premium that has no mechanical basis. For a buyer keeping the car 4–5 years, the Fabia is the smarter purchase every time. The Mk4 Fabia in particular is outstanding — better value than a Polo of the same age and better than most rivals at the same price point. Only buy the Polo if resale value in 2–3 years is a specific priority.
