Volvo's reputation for safety is fully deserved and the XC60, V60, and XC90 are among the most comfortable family cars available used. Volvo's diesel and petrol engines are generally strong — but timing belt intervals are shorter than the handbook suggests in Irish conditions, and the Aisin 8-speed automatic gearbox needs fluid every 65,000km. Air suspension on XC90 Mk1 requires a budget. Get those right and Volvo offers outstanding value.
