Best Used BMW 5 Series to Buy in Ireland 2026

8 March 2026 · CarAdvisor.ie

The BMW 5 Series is Ireland's second most searched used car — an executive saloon that offers genuine driving pleasure, long-distance comfort, and strong residuals. But it is a car where the wrong engine or wrong service history turns a great purchase into a very expensive problem. The N47 diesel timing chain issue alone has cost Irish buyers millions. Here is exactly what to buy and what to avoid.

The N47 diesel timing chain — Ireland's most expensive used car mistake

Before anything else: the BMW N47 2.0 diesel engine fitted to the E60 520d (2007–2010) and early F10 520d (2010–2012) has a rear-mounted timing chain that is notorious for premature wear and catastrophic failure. Unlike most engines where the timing chain is at the front and accessible, the N47 mounts it at the back — meaning a full engine-out job to replace it.

⚠️ N47 Diesel — Do Not Buy Without Confirmation

Any E60 520d or pre-2012 F10 520d with the N47 engine should only be purchased with documented evidence the timing chain has been replaced. Replacement cost is €3,000–€6,000+ at a BMW specialist. Failure causes complete engine destruction. The N47 was updated with a revised chain from mid-2012 on F10 cars — post-2012 520d is significantly safer. Check the engine code before buying any diesel 5 Series from this era.

F10 5 Series (2010–2016) — The sweet spot

The F10 is the most plentiful 5 Series on the Irish used market and the best value for money. A well-maintained F10 520d or 525d from 2013 onward is an outstanding used executive car. The interior quality is excellent, the driving dynamics are genuinely rewarding, and Irish DoneDeal prices for clean examples have stabilised at good value.

Best F10 engines

520d post-2012 (N47 revised chain) — the most common, adequate performance, strong economy. Confirm post-July 2012 build date to get the revised chain tensioner. Full service history essential.

525d / 530d (N57) — the six-cylinder N57 3.0 diesel is a magnificent engine. Smooth, powerful, and significantly more reliable than the N47 four-cylinder. If budget allows, the step up to 525d is worthwhile every time.

520i / 528i petrol — the N20 4-cylinder petrol had its own timing chain issues (2011–2013 build dates). Post-2013 N20 is significantly better. The 528i is a lovely motorway car but economy is modest.

F10 Best Buy

A 2013–2016 F10 530d M Sport with the N57 six-cylinder, full BMW service history, and under 130,000km. Budget €14,000–€22,000. This is the 5 Series that delivers on every promise.

G30 5 Series (2017–present) — The modern choice

The G30 is quieter, more technologically advanced, and more comfortable than the F10 — but it is also more complex and more expensive to repair when things go wrong. The B47 2.0 diesel replaces the N47 and is a better engine, but it still benefits from regular oil changes and should be inspected for EGR valve issues on high-mileage examples.

The G30 540i with the B58 3.0 turbocharged inline-six is one of the finest used executive saloons available — smooth, rapid, and largely reliable when properly serviced. Irish prices for a 2018–2020 540i run €28,000–€40,000.

What to check on any G30

8-speed ZF automatic gearbox fluid — BMW states this is a lifetime fill but it is not. Change every 60,000km. An unserviced ZF box will eventually slip and hesitate. Cost to service: €200–€300. Cost to replace: €3,500+.

iDrive software — confirm the latest software version is installed. Older iDrive 6 systems can be sluggish; iDrive 7 is a significant improvement.

Irish prices 2026

A clean F10 520d (post-2012) with full history runs €9,000–€14,000. A 530d M Sport in good order is €14,000–€22,000. G30 520d from 2017 starts around €22,000, with 530d examples at €26,000–€35,000. The G30 540i is €30,000–€42,000 for a 2018–2020 car.

CarAdvisor Bottom Line

Never buy an N47-engined 5 Series without timing chain confirmation. Post-2012 F10 530d N57 is the outstanding value pick. G30 540i is the premium recommendation. Full BMW specialist service history is non-negotiable on any 5 Series purchase.
